Police Officer Wounded, Three Suspected Hijackers Shot Dead In KZN

A police officer is reported to be in a stable condition after being shot by suspected hijackers during a dramatic shootout in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The confrontation, which took place early on Friday, resulted in three suspected hijackers being fatally wounded. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police spokesperson, provided detailed insights into the incident.

According to Colonel Netshiunda, the sequence of events unfolded when the suspects hijacked a woman’s vehicle at the R Section of Umlazi. Upon receiving the distress call, police units responded promptly, initiating a high-speed chase.

The pursuit continued to the T Section, where the suspects decided to open fire on the police officers. A gun battle ensued, resulting in the fatalities of the three suspects. The officer, who sustained an arm injury during the encounter, is now recovering well.

The aftermath of the shootout revealed crucial discoveries. Police recovered three firearms and the stolen vehicle from thee suspects. Remarkably, the hijack victim was unharmed during the violent exchange.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern in KZN, where recent weeks have seen multiple shootouts between criminals and law enforcement. Just earlier this week, another intense gun battle took place in Cato Crest, where five suspects, linked to multiple murders and robberies, were fatally wounded.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola emphasized the necessity for law enforcement officers to defend themselves, especially when encountering heavy gunfire.

Addressing public concerns over the frequency of these confrontations, Masemola reaffirmed that police officers often have no choice but to protect themselves from imminent threats. The commissioner highlighted ongoing nationwide operations aimed at combating crime and ensuring public safety.
