Police Officer Fatally Shot While Assisting Stranded Motorist

A 29-year-old police officer in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, was fatally shot while helping a stranded motorist in Gelvandale on Tuesday evening.

The officer, alongside a colleague, stopped to assist a vehicle on Kobus Road, Helensvale, at approximately 5:30 pm.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the situation turned tragic when the officer was shot in the head while attempting to help.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, the constable succumbed to his injuries.

Weapon Stolen, Investigation Underway

The deceased officer’s firearm was also reported missing. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has taken over the case, but no arrests have been made yet.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene condemned the attack, urging the public to assist with information to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Rising Concern Over Police Fatalities

This incident adds to the troubling statistics of police killings in South Africa. Between July and September 2024 alone, at least 17 officers lost their lives.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu highlighted ongoing efforts to support families of slain officers, including civil claims against perpetrators.

In a related incident, 32-year-old JMPD officer Khensani Mabaso was found dead earlier this week in Soweto with gunshot wounds, wearing her uniform.

Authorities are appealing to residents with any knowledge about the Gqeberha shooting to come forward. Lieutenant General Mene emphasised the importance of community cooperation in addressing these heinous crimes.
