A 49-year-old female police officer from the SAPS Sekhukhune District briefly appeared in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 November 2025, where she faces a murder charge after fatally shooting her 31-year-old brother-in-law at her home.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 16 November, at approximately 02:00, inside her residence in Groblersdal town. The case has been postponed to Friday, 21 November, for a formal bail application.

Victim Succumbs to Injuries in Hospital

Police were initially alerted when a man arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He was later transferred to Philadelphia Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

A murder case was opened, leading investigators to identify the suspect as a police officer stationed in the Sekhukhune District. She was traced and arrested shortly thereafter. Her state-issued firearm has been seized for forensic analysis.

Police Officer Believed She Was Under Threat

Early investigations suggest the officer was asleep when she allegedly heard someone attempting to open her door. Believing an intruder had entered her home, she reportedly fired multiple shots towards the doorway.
