Police Officer Injured In Head-On Crash On Narrow Verulam Bridge

A police officer travelling to report for duty was injured in a serious early-morning crash on a narrow steel bridge in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.
The collision involved two vehicles and left three people hurt, prompting an emergency response and the closure of a key route during peak traffic hours.

Head-On Collision on Old Main Road Bridge
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) confirmed that its members were dispatched shortly after 08:00 to the single-lane steel bridge on Old Main Road. Reports indicated that a white VW Polo and a white Renault Triber had collided head-on while crossing the bridge.
Following the impact, the VW Polo veered into the pedestrian safety rails and came to a stop against the barrier.

Police Officer Among the Injured
The driver of the VW Polo, an off-duty police officer who was dressed in full uniform and travelling to book on for duty, sustained injuries in the crash. Two occupants travelling in the Renault Triber also suffered moderate injuries.
Paramedics treated all three patients at the scene before transporting them to hospital for further medical care.

Emergency services temporarily closed the bridge to allow for medical treatment and scene management. Motorists experienced delays in the area, with congestion building along surrounding roads.
Drivers have been advised to proceed with caution and to use alternative routes where possible while recovery operations continue.
