Police Officer Fights For Life After Brutal Hijack Horror Outside Eastern Cape Shop

An off-duty police officer is in a critical condition after a violent hijacking attempt outside a shop in Humansdorp, Eastern Cape. One teenage suspect has been arrested, while a second remains on the run.

The attack unfolded on Sunday afternoon and has sparked renewed concern over violent crime targeting law enforcement officials, even when they are off duty.

Off-Duty Police Officer Attacked in Humansdorp Hijacking Attempt

According to police, the incident took place on Sunday, 4 January 2026, at about 17:20 near the corner of Du Plessis Street and Main Road in Humansdorp.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said the officer was ambushed while outside a shop.

“It is alleged that on Sunday, 4 January 2026, around 17:20, two men armed with firearms attempted to hijack an off-duty female officer, and force her into her vehicle’s boot (cargo area) outside a shop at the corner of Du Plessis Street and Main Road in Humansdorp.

“It is further said that following a struggle, and the arrival of private armed response and Saps patrol vehicles, one 18-year-old suspect was apprehended, but the second suspect managed to flee,” Nkohli said.

The officer sustained serious injuries during the attack and is currently fighting for her life.

Teen Suspect Arrested, Faces Multiple Serious Charges

Nkohli confirmed that the 18-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He will face charges including attempted hijacking, attempted kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and contravention of the Firearms Control Act.

Police have launched a manhunt for the second suspect and are appealing to the public for assistance.

“Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the second suspect to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Zuan Nepgen on 081 234 7783 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.”
