Police Minister Mchunu Plans To Remove All Illegal Firearms In South Africa

The newly appointed Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, has announced ambitious plans to review and strengthen South Africa’s firearm control regulations.

This move is aimed at curbing the growing use of unlicensed and stolen guns, a significant contributor to the country’s high crime rates.

During a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, Mchunu outlined his key priorities, focusing on enhancing public safety and reducing violent crime.

Earlier this year, Mchunu’s predecessor, Bheki Cele, revealed in parliament that nearly 2,000 firearms were stolen from the police service between 2021 and 2023. This alarming statistic has underscored the urgency of addressing the issue of illegal firearms.

The proliferation of unlicensed and stolen guns has been linked to a rise in violent crimes, including murders, which has prompted the new police minister to take decisive action.

Senzo Mchunu has emphasized that additional resources will be allocated to tackle the use of illegal firearms. He stated, “This is certainly contributing to the high levels of murder in the country.

We are intensifying our efforts to remove illegal firearms from our streets and ensuring improved gun control measures.

Legislation will be reviewed.” The minister’s plan includes a comprehensive review of existing firearm control regulations and the implementation of more stringent measures to prevent the circulation of illegal weapons.
