Police Launch Manhunt For Shooter Of Officer On Duty

Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for armed assailants after an off-duty police officer was shot and killed in Mabopane on Monday afternoon.

The police officer, a 50-year-old sergeant from the Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit, was tragically killed in what appears to be an unprovoked attack.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to help apprehend the suspects.
Officer Killed In Mabopane Shooting
According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the officer was driving his red Polo when suspects in a sedan opened fire.

The sergeant lost control of his vehicle and collided with a Toyota Venture before coming to a halt.

Paramedics confirmed the officer’s death at the scene.
Call For Public Assistance
Masondo appealed to the public for any information that could help in tracking down the suspects.
He said, “Anyone with information that can assist in the apprehension of the suspects is urged to contact their nearest police station or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
Information can also be provided anonymously via the My SAPS App,” he said.
Recent Police Shootings In Gauteng
This incident follows a similar attack in November, where two Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officers were shot, one fatally.
