Police Kills Girlfriend, Her Brother, Then Himself In Soweto Birthday Drama

What was supposed to be a night of cake, candles, and good vibes ended in unspeakable tragedy when a police captain fatally shot his girlfriend and her brother during her birthday party — before turning the gun on himself.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the shocking incident unfolded in Protea, Soweto on Saturday night.

The group had gathered to celebrate the birthday of the captain’s girlfriend — who, in a grim twist, was also a fellow officer. Midway through the evening, the captain allegedly asked her to step aside for a private conversation. Moments later, all hell broke loose.

“It is alleged that the group was at home celebrating the birthday of the captain’s girlfriend, who is also a police officer.

“The captain reportedly called the girlfriend aside and that is when people saw him draw a firearm and shoot her and her brother dead, while three other civilians sustained injuries. He then turned the gun on himself,” said Nevhuhulwi.

The sudden eruption of violence left partygoers in shock, and three others were wounded. What should’ve ended with a birthday toast ended with forensic teams and flashing lights.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called on officers to seek help rather than resort to violence.

“We give our members these tools [guns] to protect themselves against criminals, so it is very disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones,” he said.

“I urge our members to make use of employee health and wellness facilities to assist them in dealing with any problems they may be facing, whether work or personal-related.”
