Police Investigate Stolen Firearms At Kouga Traffic Department

Eastern Cape police have launched a full-scale investigation following a break-in and theft at the Kouga Local Municipality Traffic Department offices in Humansdorp.

The incident, which occurred sometime between Friday, April 25, and Tuesday, April 29, 2025, has raised major security concerns as 17 firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash were stolen.

According to Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province, the break-in happened at the traffic department offices located on Heugh Street.

The premises were last secured around 3pm on Friday, and the burglary was only discovered when staff returned at approximately 6:45am on Tuesday.

Heavy Machinery Used

Preliminary investigations by the Humansdorp SAPS suggest that the suspects used heavy machinery to force entry through the building’s roof.

The bold and calculated nature of the break-in points to an organised criminal operation.

“Among the stolen items are 17 firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash,” Brigadier Gantana confirmed. “No arrests have been made at this stage, but we are pursuing all leads vigorously.”

Forensic teams and detectives are working around the clock to gather evidence, including surveillance footage and possible witness statements from nearby establishments.

Police are calling on the public to assist with any information that could lead to arrests in connection with the traffic department burglary in Humansdorp.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or report it to the nearest police station,” said Gantana.

“The stolen firearms pose a serious threat to public safety, and authorities are treating the case with the highest priority.”
