Police Investigate Break-In At eThekwini Municipality’s Integrity And Investigations Unit

eThekwini Municipality’s City Manager, Musa Mbhele,has called for a thorough police investigation following a break-in at the city’s Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) office on Saturday.

The CIIU, led by former Hawks top cop Jimmy Ngcobo, is tasked with investigating fraud, corruption, and maladministration within the municipality.

The break-in is coming at a time the unit is handling over 300 complaints related to fraud and corruption.

Reports indicated that some of the unit’s investigators have faced threats, raising concerns over the safety of those working on  sensitive cases.

Second Break-In In Three Months

This latest break-in marks the second such incident within the past three months.

In January, another break-in occurred at the human settlements department office in the Embassy Building, where sensitive municipal documents were reportedly stolen.

The stolen documents were linked to an investigation into fraudulent transfers of millions meant for housing projects.

Mbhele condemned the attack on the CIIU office, expressing concern that those working to uncover corruption are being targeted.

He reiterated the municipality’s commitment to fighting fraud, noting, “We will not be deterred in our quest to root out fraud and corruption without fear or favour.”

Police Investigations In Early Stages

While the motive behind the break-in remains unclear, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana confirmed that the matter had been reported to the police.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu stated that investigations are still in the early stages.
