2 Police Officers Injured After High-Speed Taxi Collision In Gugulethu

Two police officers were rushed to a medical facility after sustaining injuries in a head-on collision with a speeding Toyota Quantum taxi on Klipfontein Road in NY108 Gugulethu, Western Cape. The crash occurred at approximately 6:45am on Sunday.
Reports indicate that the taxi was overtaking two vehicles at high speed when it collided with the SAPS vehicle, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Images shared online show the front ends of the taxi and police bakkie smashed in as authorities managed the scene and onlookers gathered.
Reckless Driving Case Opened After Police Injured
Police have registered a case for reckless and negligent driving following the incident. According to SAPS spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made:
“Gugulethu police registered a reckless and negligent driving case following an accident involving a police vehicle and taxi on Sunday, 11 January at 6:45. Both members in the police vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. No arrest yet, investigations continue.”

The taxi driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, survived with minor injuries.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile app anonymously.
Taxi Affiliation Still Unknown
It remains unclear which taxi organisation the driver belongs to. When contacted, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said he had seen the incident online but had no information about the driver’s affiliation.
Nceba Enge, chairperson of the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association, confirmed that the driver is not a member of their organisation.
