Police Hostage Drama Ends In Tragedy As Constable Kills Nephew Before Turning Gun On Himself

A dramatic police hostage situation unfolded in Mamelodi East on Tuesday morning after a 32-year-old police constable barricaded himself inside his home with his mother and 18-year-old nephew.

Witnesses reported that the officer, identified as Constable Thapelo Mashigo, fired two shots before police arrived at the scene around 08:00. Authorities later confirmed that only three people—the constable, his elderly mother, and his nephew—were inside the house.

Police Hostage: Negotiations Lead to Release of Elderly Mother

Hostage negotiators spent hours engaging with the constable in an attempt to peacefully end the standoff. After nearly 15 hours, the officer finally agreed to release his 69-year-old mother at around 23:00.

Paramedics treated her on the scene before transporting her to hospital for further care.

Just before midnight, as Special Task Force (STF) members prepared to force entry, two gunshots rang out from inside the house.

When officers entered, they discovered the body of Constable Mashigo, who had fatally shot himself. They also found the lifeless body of his 18-year-old nephew, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness unit has been deployed to support the grieving family and colleagues of Constable Mashigo.

Police confirmed that cases of murder, kidnapping, and an inquest will be opened at the Mamelodi East Police Station, while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has also been informed.

Constable Mashigo joined the police service in 2019 and was based at Boschkop police station, most recently deployed to the regional Essential Infrastructure Task Team.
