Police Halt Cape Town Gang Boss Jerome Booysen And Son At Springbok Training Camp

A routine Springbok training session in Cape Town took an unexpected turn when notorious gang boss Jerome “Donkie” Booysen and his son, businessman and nightclub owner Joel Booysen, were stopped by police.

The incident unfolded at Erica Park sports ground in Belhar, where the national rugby team has been preparing for their clash against the Wallabies at DHL Stadium on Saturday, 23 August. Erica Park is also the home ground of the Belhar Rugby and Football Club—owned by Jerome Booysen himself.

According to reports, members of the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) intervened and confiscated firearms from the Booysens’ vehicles. Although the guns were reportedly licensed, police prevented the father and son from continuing their visit.

In one video clip circulating online, Jerome Booysen, nicknamed “Donkie,” was seen casually walking alongside Springbok players before the police action.

The Booysens’ Ties to Crime and Controversy

Jerome and Joel Booysen’s appearance at the Springbok camp has raised eyebrows, given their long-standing association with criminal allegations.

Joel, often seen in the company of South African celebrities, is currently facing murder charges linked to the death of Cape Town’s so-called “Steroid King,” Brian Wainstein.

The nightclub owner—known to have been a close friend of the late rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes—survived two alleged assassination attempts in 2023, reportedly linked to rival gangs.

His father, Jerome, rose to prominence as a childhood rugby star before becoming known as the leader of the feared Sexy Boys gang, alongside his brothers Colin and Michael. Beyond alleged criminal activities, he has also built a business empire, particularly in real estate and through his ownership of Belhar Rugby and Football Club.

Allegations Against the Sexy Boys Gang

The Sexy Boys gang, long associated with Booysen, has been accused of drug trafficking and orchestrating violent hits against rivals in Cape Town’s underworld. Jerome’s presence at a Springbok training camp, therefore, sparked immediate concern from law enforcement.

While the Booysens maintain their public image through business and sporting ties, their alleged underworld connections continue to cast a long shadow over their activities—including high-profile appearances such as this week’s Springbok camp visit.
