Police Commander Shot Dead In Apparent Hit In Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga police have initiated a manhunt after Lieutenant-Colonel Pieter Pretorius, a 59-year-old commander of the Vehicle Identification Unit in Ermelo, was gunned down in what appears to be a targeted attack.

Pretorius was reportedly en route to meet an informant when an armed suspect ambushed him. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the officer was fatally shot while driving an official vehicle, which was left riddled with bullet holes.

“After the shooting, the assailant allegedly fled the scene in a white sedan,” Ndubane said, adding that a specialised investigative team has been assembled to probe the murder and track down the perpetrators.
