Police Boss Confirms Links Between Crime Syndicate And Minister Senzo Mchunu

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has confirmed his support for KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s claims that there are credible connections between an alleged crime syndicate member and Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu.

During a parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee session, Masemola said he agreed with Mkhwanazi’s testimony, which linked murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and businessman Brown Mogotsi to the minister.

“I believe General Mkhwanazi might have shown you some WhatsApp messages, and General Khumalo will still show you other messages that can give evidence to that effect in terms of communication between Mr Mogotsi, between Cat Matlala, and between the Minister,” said Masemola.

Crime Intelligence Head ‘Targeted’ to Derail Investigations

The Commissioner further backed allegations that Crime Intelligence head Major General Dumisani Khumalo was deliberately targeted as part of a wider effort to obstruct ongoing investigations.

Masemola told Parliament that Khumalo’s controversial arrest had disrupted the operations of the Crime Intelligence division, raising concerns about interference in sensitive cases.

According to Mkhwanazi’s testimony earlier in the week, Khumalo’s arrest formed part of a broader “project” that also involved the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Questions Over Disbanding of Political Killings Task Team

The committee heard that the dissolution of the PKTT appeared to coincide with attempts to suppress major investigations, including those in Gauteng.

Masemola revealed that he had sought an explanation from Minister Mchunu regarding the decision to disband the task team, but received no response.

Committee member Sibonelo Nomvalo pressed Masemola to clarify whether he believed the claims made by Mkhwanazi linking Mchunu to individuals implicated in serious crimes.
