Police Arrests 6 In Connection With Vanderbijlpark CIT Robbery

Police in Gauteng have arrested six men in connection with a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg.

The suspects were apprehended just hours after the robbery, following a well-coordinated  operation.

The CIT robbery took place while a security team was loading cash at an ATM.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the suspects approached the security guards at gunpoint, using a rifle and a pistol.

He said, “They robbed the guards and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in two getaway vehicles, an Audi A3 and a Toyota Quantum. Fortunately, no shots were fired, and there were no injuries reported.”

Police Operation Leads to Arrests and Seizures

Upon receiving information about the robbery, an assigned police team, including Sedibeng K9, Public Order Policing, and the CIT task team, began tracking the suspects.

The investigation led them to a house in Evaton, where the suspects were arrested.

Two vehicles that were allegedly used during the crime, along with three pistols, one rifle, five cellphones, and the stolen money, were also seized.

Colonel Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the six suspects are facing multiple charges, including armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The suspects are expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court soon.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Commends Swift Action

The arrest of the suspects was welcomed by the Provincial Commissioner in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.

Mthombeni commended the police team for their quick response, which led to the successful recovery of stolen goods and the capture of the criminals.

He said, “The swift and efficient action by our officers has ensured that the suspects were arrested with the stolen goods still in their possession.”
