Busted! Police Nab Gunman Who Opened Fire On Cops In Gqeberha

Police in Gqeberha wasted no time hunting down a trigger-happy thug who allegedly opened fire on their patrol van in Missionvale.

On Sunday night, officers from Algoa Park SAPS were cruising along Jack Road when a gunman suddenly popped out from between houses and sprayed bullets at their vehicle. Miraculously, no officers were killed, but one was left hospitalised.

Community Tip-Off Nails Suspect

After the attack, a massive manhunt was launched, and thanks to a tip-off from the public, cops tracked down their man.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said the 30-year-old suspect was cornered near the Nelson Mandela University (Missionvale Campus). He was caught red-handed with an illegal 9mm pistol and ammo.

“The suspect was handcuffed on the spot. Detectives are still profiling him and checking if he’s linked to other crimes,” Nkohli confirmed.

The alleged cop shooter will face the music in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 1 October 2025. He’s looking at attempted murder and illegal gun possession charges.

Police Told ‘Don’t Die With Your Gun in the Holster’

The brazen hit comes as attacks on cops climb across Mzansi. At least 27 officers have been killed this year, adding to fears that criminals have declared war on law enforcement.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile recently urged SAPS members to fight fire with fire:

“Don’t die with your gun in your holster. Protect yourselves. Criminals must know: attacking a police officer is an attack on the state.”
