Police Arrest 16-year-old Linked To Attempted Hijacking Of Ian Cameron In Cape Town

Western Cape police have confirmed the arrest of a 16-year-old boy linked to the attempted hijacking of Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson Ian Cameron and two other Democratic Alliance (DA) members in Cape Town.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said officers worked through the night investigating the attack, which happened on Tuesday afternoon. The second suspect was arrested in Browns Farm in the early hours of Wednesday morning and has since been formally charged.

 

First Suspect Shot During Attack

Potelwa added that the first suspect, an 18-year-old man, was apprehended on Tuesday evening when he sought medical treatment at a facility in Lentegeur.

“It is believed he was shot during the attack on the three victims when one of the vehicle occupants allegedly fired a shot in response. He is currently under police guard in hospital,” Potelwa said.

Police confirmed that they are still searching for a third suspect believed to have been part of the crime. The arrested suspects face charges of attempted murder and attempted hijacking.

Ian Cameron and DA Colleagues Survive Attack

The attempted hijacking occurred on the corner of Eisleben and Govan Mbeki Road in Philippi East while Cameron, along with DA colleagues Nicholas Gotsell and Lisa-Maré Schickerling, were returning from an oversight visit to the police training college.

Their vehicle was ambushed by three men who hurled bricks, shattering several windows. Cameron said his colleague sensed something was wrong just before the attack.

“Traffic was piling up, and my colleague Lisa said something doesn’t feel lekker. Next thing we knew, people were breaking our windows,” Cameron recalled. The group managed to escape and drove to safety at a nearby filling station.

Injuries and Political Reaction

Cameron confirmed that all three sustained injuries but none life-threatening.

“Nick is receiving treatment, Lisa has a minor head injury, and I sustained some injuries, including a few stitches and dental damage,” he said in a post on X.

Despite the ordeal, Cameron emphasised that the attack would not deter his work: “This was a serious and deliberate attack, but incidents like this will not stop us from ensuring accountability and safety.”

Meanwhile, DA Chief Whip George Michalakis urged Police Minister Feroz Cachalia to allocate more resources to crime-ridden communities such as Philippi.
