Pietermaritzburg Construction Company Fined R20,000 For Fraud

A Pietermaritzburg-based construction company, Mathuba Thuba Construction CC, has been fined R20,000 after being convicted for submitting fraudulent Value Added Tax (VAT) returns.
The fraudulent activity in the Pietermaritzburg company resulted in the South African Revenue Service (SARS) losing nearly R290,000.

The company’s sole director, Goodman Ndodenhle Mbanjwa, 46, was found guilty after submitting false VAT returns for November 2019, which were flagged during an internal audit by SARS.
Investigation Leads To Conviction
The fraudulent VAT submissions in Pietermaritzburg were brought to light by SARS’s internal audit team, which prompted an investigation by the Hawks’ Pietermaritzburg Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team.

The investigation led to the arrest and charging of Mbanjwa and his company in October 2024 for fraud and contravention of the Tax Administration Act.
However, following several court appearances, the charges against Mbanjwa were withdrawn, and the Pietermaritzburg Mathuba Thuba Construction CC was fined R20,000.
Hawks Commended For Their Efforts In Tackling Tax Fraud

The Provincial Head of the KZN Hawks, Major General Lesetja Senona, praised the investigating officers for their thorough work in uncovering the fraudulent activities.

In a separate case, another individual, 58-year-old Malcolm Kgosietsile Lesolang, was convicted for submitting fake VAT invoices that resulted in a loss of over R7.4 million for SARS. Lesolang was fined R100,000, and his company received a R50,000 fine.
Authorities are continuing to crack down on tax fraud to safeguard the country’s financial integrity.
