Philippi Mob Justice Leaves Man Dead, Murder Investigation Opened

Police have launched a murder investigation following the killing of a man suspected of robbery in Browns Farm, Philippi, on Monday morning.

According to residents, the 25-year-old man was known in the area and had previously been caught for alleged criminal activity.

It is alleged that he was caught during a house robbery on Monday morning before residents confronted him.

Community Vigilantism Sparks Police Probe in Philippi

Witnesses claim the man was taken to a nearby park, where he was assaulted by a group of residents using planks and sjamboks. He later died at the scene.

Residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the man admitted to committing crimes in the area. They said their actions were driven by frustration with what they described as repeated failures by the police and justice system.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder case has been opened and is under investigation.

Residents Cite Lack of Trust in Justice System

Community members claimed the suspect had previously been handed over to police but was released shortly afterwards, which they say contributed to growing anger in the area.

“People are fed up and disappointed with the police and the justice system, and are now forced to take the law into their own hands,” said a resident. “This will teach other would-be criminals that when you do crime, you pay with your life. You die.”

Another resident said: “He screamed for mercy and begged for forgiveness, but it was too late; the people wanted him dead.”

Community Leaders Condemn Taking the Law Into One’s Own Hands

Local community leader Mncedi Mlibo strongly criticised the actions of residents, warning against vigilantism.

He said the police should always be contacted when someone is suspected of committing a crime, emphasising that violence only worsens instability and undermines the rule of law.

The investigation continues as police work to identify those involved in the killing.
