Philippi Massacre Breakthrough: Five Arrested After Deadly Marikana Informal Settlement Shooting

Police in the Western Cape have arrested five suspects following a deadly mass shooting in the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East.

The arrests come after four people — three men and one woman — were shot and killed during the incident on Saturday evening. Another victim survived the attack but was injured.

Authorities launched a manhunt after the shooting, which took place on Disa Road at around 9.30pm.

Tracing operation leads to arrests and firearm recovery

According to police spokesperson Novela Potelwa, officers from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit worked overnight to track down those responsible.

“The arrests were effected early on Monday morning (March 9) as part of a tracing operation that was initiated after the shooting incident occurred on Disa Road in the Marikana informal settlement of Philippi East,” Potelwa said.

The operation, supported by the police Combat Team, resulted in the arrest of five suspects aged between 25 and 35. Investigators also seized two firearms believed to be connected to the attack.

Potelwa confirmed the weapons will undergo ballistic testing.

“The tracing operation led to the arrests and confiscation of firearms that will be undergoing ballistics tests to determine if they were utilised in the commission of the murders and other crimes.”

The suspects are facing charges including murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of firearms. They are expected to appear in court soon.

Extortion suspected as motive behind Phillipi killings

Police believe the shooting may be linked to extortion activities in the area.

“The suspects between the ages of 25 and 35 have been charged with murder, attempted murder, as well as the illegal possession of firearms. They are expected to appear in court in due course. The motive for the incident is believed to be linked to the crime of extortion,” Potelwa said.

Authorities have also urged residents in the Marikana community to come forward with any information about related crimes that may have gone unreported.
