Phala Phala Heist Accused Spent R4 Million On Luxury Cars In One Year

One of the men accused of stealing from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm allegedly blew about R4 million on six cars within just 12 months.

This revelation was made by a car dealership sales manager in Benoni, who testified at the Modimolle Regional Court on Friday about his dealings with accused number one, Imanuwela David.

David, along with siblings Froliana and Ndilinasho Joseph, is accused of breaking into the president’s Limpopo farm and stealing $580,000 in cash.

Car Sales Manager Testifies on High-End Purchases

The court heard that on 10 February 2020, a day after the Phala Phala break-in, the sales manager received a call from someone interested in buying a vehicle. That caller turned out to be David, who went on to build a close relationship with the dealership.

During his testimony, the manager said he sold David a Golf GTI, a VW Polo, a BMW M5, a Porsche Carrera 4S, and two identical Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons — after David crashed the first one.

According to the witness, David paid for every car in cash, using US dollars.

“Me being a salesman, I demo’d the car to accused number one [David]. What’s in the car, like CDs and stuff like that. From there onwards, I took him to the director [of the car dealership] and they discussed the prices and stuff like that. From there onwards, my job is done,” he testified.

The trial is set to continue on Monday.
