Petrol And Diesel Prices Drop In South Africa For September 2025

South African motorists will see some relief at the pumps this week, as the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed fuel price cuts effective midnight on Tuesday, 2 September 2025.

According to the official announcement, fuel prices will drop by 4 cents per litre, while diesel users benefit more significantly, with reductions of up to 57 cents per litre. Illuminating paraffin will also decrease by 42 cents per litre.

“While modest, this decrease offers welcome relief for consumers and businesses facing rising costs across the board,” an industry source said.

Global Market Shifts Drive Price Reductions

The cuts come after a turbulent month in global markets. Oil prices dropped as OPEC+ output rose, while the Donald Trump administration’s renewed tariff and trade war dampened global demand.

At the same time, the global diesel shortage began to ease, helping improve international diesel price recoveries.

Despite global uncertainty, the South African rand held firm, trading steadily between R17.50 and R17.80 to the US dollar throughout August. This resilience, coupled with improved diesel prices, contributed to the over-recovery that enabled September’s fuel price cuts.
