Pentagon To Award Elon Musk SpaceX $2 Billion Contract To Develop ‘Golden Dome’ Missile-Tracking Satellites

SpaceX is reportedly on track to receive a $2 billion contract from the Pentagon to develop satellites as part of the United States government’s defence network.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the Elon Musk–led company will be responsible for creating up to 600 satellites capable of detecting and tracking missiles and aircraft.

These satellites are said to form part of President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” initiative, a large-scale missile defence system designed to intercept threats before they can reach American soil.

The project, unveiled in May, mirrors Israel’s well-known Iron Dome system but is intended to function on a broader, global scale.

While the Pentagon has not released full technical specifications or deployment details, insiders suggest the initiative is one of the most ambitious defence undertakings of recent years.

SpaceX Leads ‘Golden Dome’ Effort Amid Wider Defence Push

The WSJ’s report indicates that SpaceX’s $2 billion contract may be just one piece of a much larger puzzle.

The Golden Dome programme is expected to involve several private companies, including Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies, as the Trump administration pushes to complete major defence goals before the end of his term.

In addition to the Golden Dome, the Pentagon is reportedly exploring new uses for SpaceX’s extensive satellite infrastructure. Its Starlink network—currently boasting over 8,000 satellites—could soon support military communications, global surveillance, and vehicle tracking.

This potential collaboration shows SpaceX’s growing influence within national security operations and the US government’s reliance on private sector innovation for strategic defence capabilities.
