Pearl Thusi Reveals Harrowing Face-Off With Thabo Bester In Netflix’s Docuseries

Netflix’s Beauty and The Bester is already making headlines, and Pearl Thusi’s shocking testimony about her encounter with convicted criminal and Facebook rapist Thabo Bester is turning heads.
The three-part docuseries, streaming since 12 September, dives into the twisted story of Thabo Bester, known as the “Facebook rapist.” Pearl shared her narrow escape, revealing how the encounter could have turned deadly.
“I don’t know what specifically drew him to me. Back then, Facebook was a big thing and that is how Thabo got hold of me. It was some sort of a TV hosting gig. I got there and he got into the car.
“After about 25 minutes of driving, he said turn left here and I realised it’s a dead end. As I turn to look at him, he’s already drawn the knife. My mind is racing, adrenaline is pumping. I never felt so stupid. I asked him why he’s doing this and he starts a monologue about his life and how hard it has been,” Pearl recounted.
Faith and Quick Thinking Helped Pearl Thusi Survive
Despite the terrifying threat, Pearl’s faith played a key role in her survival. She reached out to her pastor, Gift, who negotiated with Bester and handed him a Bible.

Pearl recalled encouraging him to surrender to God, and later involved police when she saw a van nearby. The emotional confrontation ended with Bester’s apology: “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do it. I don’t know what got into me.”
Pearl reflected on the ordeal, saying, “For me, as a young Christian woman… I really was about to help someone.” Her testimony adds a deeply personal layer to the story, highlighting the psychological toll of encountering a dangerous criminal.
Social Media Buzz and Skepticism
Not everyone is convinced by Pearl’s account. Social media users took to X to voice doubts:
A user with the account Calidonny said, “That came out more as scripted to dramatise the documentary. It is too unreal. Pearl is an actress; she MIGHT have played another role; it’s just a paying gig.”

Another account user known as SthembiD wrote, “I’m struggling to believe her narrative.” while, Dbanj25 added “That is pure lie. The story doesn’t make sense at all.”

Account xayo246 asked a big question: “So he threatens you with a knife, but you managed to stop him and voluntarily take him to church? You then both leave the church together and end up never telling the police what happened to you? I just want to make sure I got that right #BeautyAndTheBester.”
The series continues to spark debate, with Pearl Thusi’s story at the centre of the conversation. Beauty and the Bester is now available to stream on Netflix and more stories will continue to pop up from Beauty and the Bester.
