Paul O’Sullivan Ordered Back To Finish Testimony After Parliamentary Walkout Drama

Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan has been instructed to conclude his testimony before the ad hoc parliamentary committee on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Parliament’s Legal Services have confirmed that O’Sullivan must notify the committee of his attendance by 12 midday today, or face a formal summons.

The committee is investigating allegations made last July by KwaZulu-Natal police head Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The issue of the forensic investigator’s sudden departure dominated the ad hoc committee’s meeting on Monday, March 2, as members discussed the implications of his walkout.

Legal Update on O’Sullivan’s Walkout

Andile Tetyana from Parliament’s Legal Services explained the committee’s position: “The Secretary will recall that on Thursday, February 26, 2026, after Mr O’Sullivan walked out of the committee proceedings without permission and in violation of the rules of the National Assembly and the Cause of Privileges Act, you asked committee members whether it was their wish for Mr O’Sullivan to return and complete his evidence.”

Tetyana added, “The committee resolved that Mr O’Sullivan must return and conclude his evidence, as he was still under examination when he walked out.

“We can confirm that on Friday, February 27, 2026, we sent correspondence to Mr O’Sullivan inviting him to appear before the committee on Thursday, March 5, 2026. He was still under examination when he abandoned proceedings without the Treasurer’s permission.”

The legal representative also emphasised that O’Sullivan must confirm his willingness to attend by midday today.

Tensions Erupt During Parliamentary Hearing

The walkout occurred last Thursday as O’Sullivan was being questioned by Advocate Bongiwe Mkhize, who said only a few questions remained. O’Sullivan repeatedly requested to ask his own questions and insisted he had to leave by 1pm to avoid the cost of rescheduling his flight.

As Mkhize wrapped up, he stood, packed his belongings, and began to leave. EFF leader Julius Malema urged him to sit down, saying he had not been dismissed. MK Party MP David Skosana warned of potential legal action, stating, “You are walking out,” while O’Sullivan responded, “I am finished.”

Malema reminded him that only committee chair Soviet Lekganyane could excuse him, but he left regardless. The chair acknowledged members’ restraint, stating that emotions were understandably high, and confirmed the committee would consult Parliamentary Legal Services regarding the departure.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza called his exit “unfortunate.” Following the incident, the EFF filed a criminal case against him at Cape Town Central Police Station last Friday.
