Parolee Sentenced To Two Life Terms For Raping 14-Year-Old Neighbour

A 39-year-old convicted rapist who was out on parol from Olievenhoutbosch has been sentenced to two life terms by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of raping his 14-year-old neighbour.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that the court ordered the sentences to run concurrently. The man’s name will also be entered into the National Register of Sexual Offenders, and he has been declared unfit to own a firearm.

Rape Incidents and Reporting of the Crimes

The offences occurred in October 2021, when the man lured the girl into his room, locked the door, and assaulted her on two separate occasions. In one incident, he gave her R150 in an attempt to silence her.

The matter only came to light in May 2022 when the victim asked her mother for money. “When the mother questioned her, the victim told her mother that the man had once given her money after raping her,” Mahanjana said.

The mother reported the case to police immediately, leading to the parolee’s arrest. The girl was later taken to the Laudium Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical, psychological, and legal support.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

In court, the accused pleaded not guilty, alleging that the victim’s family had influenced her to falsely accuse him. However, State Prosecutor Advocate Chester Molaba provided evidence proving his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The defence argued for leniency, citing that the man was a taxi driver and father of two children. But Molaba opposed this, stressing that the accused was already on parole for a 2009 rape conviction.

“He committed this offence of rape while on parole for committing a similar offence of rape which he was convicted of in 2009, as such he cannot be rehabilitated,” Molaba said, urging the court to impose life imprisonment.

Magistrate Themba Ndandwe ruled that the man showed no remorse and remained a danger to society. He concluded there were no compelling reasons to justify a lesser sentence, handing down two concurrent life terms.
