Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee Resumes Hearings After Delay Over Mkhwanazi’s Statement

The Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of corruption within the police service has resumed its proceedings after a lengthy adjournment. The delay was prompted by concerns over the adequacy of Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s witness statement.

Some committee members had objected to Mkhwanazi being sworn in, arguing that the document he submitted was not an original statement but a supplementary one. This led to calls for a proper and complete version before the inquiry could continue.

Members Demand Original Testimony for Transparency

Tensions rose as members questioned why the evidence leader, Norman Arendse, included submissions Mkhwanazi had made to the Madlanga Commission. They insisted that the parliamentary committee is an independent body and not a subordinate structure of the commission.

The dispute centred on ensuring that the committee receives an original, stand-alone statement directly from Mkhwanazi, rather than a document compiled from prior testimony.

Mkhwanazi Testifies After Two-Week Delay

Mkhwanazi’s appearance before the Ad Hoc Committee comes two weeks after he testified at the Madlanga Commission, where he detailed allegations he first raised in July this year.

Committee Chairperson Soviet Lekganyane confirmed that the concerns had been resolved following consultations between Mkhwanazi and the senior counsel.

“The senior counsel has consulted with Mkhwanazi, and they are satisfied that the document that they are presenting before the Ad Hoc Committee is in accordance with our expectations,” said Lekganyane before administering Mkhwanazi’s oath.

With the matter settled, the committee is now expected to proceed with hearing Mkhwanazi’s full testimony as part of its wider investigation into corruption and political interference within the police service.
