Parliamentary Committee On Police Corruption Resumes With Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo Testimony

The parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee investigating police corruption will reconvene on Tuesday, with Deputy Minister of Police Polly Boshielo scheduled to give testimony. Her appearance follows last week’s evidence from the department’s second Deputy Minister, Cassel Mathale.

Boshielo is expected to outline her insights on the current state of policing in South Africa and provide information regarding the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) by former Minister Senzo Mchunu.

The committee aims to further explore the roles and responsibilities of deputy ministers, including powers delegated to them in overseeing the police service.

Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo’s Role Under Scrutiny

Last week, Mathale told the committee that he had not been granted any delegated powers by Mchunu since his appointment a year ago. He added that he was not informed about the directive to disband the PKTT.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia is expected to testify after Boshielo, highlighting the importance of ongoing oversight efforts. Cachalia emphasised the role of both the Madlanga Commission and the Ad Hoc Committee in addressing corruption within the police force.

“But the Madlanga and Ad Hoc Committee is going to cast an eye on the darkness of problems that we face in South African policing. It will present us with a difficult moment,” Cachalia told the committee.

The committee will hear from Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde, as well as businessman Brown Mogotsi, who has been linked to various controversies.

Their testimonies are expected to provide further insight into the disbanding of the PKTT and wider issues affecting law enforcement in the country.
