Gqeberha activist Pamela Mabini, a well-known social and gender rights advocate, was gunned down in her parked car just metres from her home on Friday morning.

Mabini, 46, was a fierce advocate for female victims of crime and the founder of the Maro Foundation, which helped the homeless and provided food, clothing, and school supplies to underprivileged children.

“She had multiple gunshot wounds. At the moment, no further information is available. A case of murder has been opened and is under investigation,” she said.

A Voice for Justice Silenced

Mabini was no stranger to threats. She was a prominent figure in protests and campaigns against rape-accused televangelist Timothy Omotoso, and since 2018, she had received multiple death threats.

She also made headlines last year when she challenged former police minister Bheki Cele to walk through the crime-ridden townships of Gqeberha without his VIP protection.

Despite her high-profile activism, her family is not speculating whether her murder was a targeted hit.

Her cousin, Luzuko Gaxamba, expressed the deep sorrow gripping the family.

“She played a big role in society. She had an NPO assisting the destitute and special needs schoolchildren. She was strongly advocating against crime. Her death is extremely painful to us as a family,” he said.

Shattered Community Mourns a Fighter for Justice

Mabini’s devastated mother, Cingiwe, was inconsolable, as heart-wrenching cries of grief echoed through the streets.
