Outlet Owner Arrested For Staged Hijacking Of Liquor Truck Worth R1.2m

A prominent liquor outlet owner in Limpopo, Phillip Mokgadi Maphepha, 34, has been arrested along with his associate Lesedi Issac Khubayi, 31, and truck driver Robert Ledwaba, 30, on charges of theft.

The trio allegedly staged a truck hijacking, stealing liquor worth R1.2 million.

Staged Hijacking

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the Polokwane Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VICU) uncovered a lengthy investigation revealing that the truck driver had colluded with another person to stage the hijacking.

The stolen liquor was transported to a business along the N1 north freeway, outside Polokwane.

The suspects then abandoned the trailer and falsely reported the hijacking at the Gilead police station.

Court Proceedings

The three accused men appeared before the Gilead Periodic Court on Monday and were each granted R2,000 bail.

Their case was postponed to May 19 for further police investigations.

Maphepha and Khubayi face charges of truck hijacking and theft, while Ledwaba has been charged with theft and perjury.

Limpopo provincial commissioner of police Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the VICU for their “meticulous investigation” and warned criminals that they cannot outsmart the police.
