Over 400 Kingpins Identified During Gauteng Crime Cracks Down

Gauteng authorities identified more than 400 kingpins responsible for criminal activities across the province. This follows a breakthrough in the fight against crime.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi made the announcement during his 2025 State of the Province Address in Tshwane on Monday night. Acknowledging the pressing challenges faced by the province, including high crime rates, cable theft, and deteriorating infrastructure, he emphasised the government’s commitment to combating criminal networks.

Recent crime statistics, covering the third quarter of the 2024/25 financial year (from 1 October to 31 December 2024), showed that Gauteng recorded the highest percentage of murder cases in the country, accounting for 25% of reported murders. It was followed by KwaZulu-Natal (21.4%), the Eastern Cape (18.9%), and the Western Cape (17.4%).

Statistics released last week, by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, have intensified calls for stronger law enforcement measures. Lesufi assured residents that the province is making significant progress in tackling crime.

Lesufi revealed that, through collaboration with the private sector, police, and intelligence agencies, authorities have deployed an advanced surveillance mechanism to monitor 442 identified crime kingpins.

“Together with the private sector, the police, and other intelligence networks, we have unleashed a surveillance capability that allows us to track these criminals’ movements, monitor where they stay, and anticipate their next actions,” said Lesufi.

Focus of this initiative is on major crimes, including cash-in-transit heists, kidnappings, hijackings, contract killings, ATM bombings, blue-light gangs, and business robberies.

So far, at least 50 of the identified kingpins have been arrested. Lesufi expressed confidence that authorities would apprehend the remaining criminals in the next six months.

“We truly believe this is a groundbreaking initiative. These 442 individuals are responsible for orchestrating violent crimes in our province, and we are committed to dismantling their operations,” he added.

Premier Lesufi, highlighted the 24-hour surveillance being conducted on the identified crime bosses. He commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their swift action in apprehending a key suspect linked to a high-profile murder in Sandton.

“Last night, an alleged mastermind behind the murder of a Sandton businessman was about to flee the country to Ethiopia. While he was at the airport, he was arrested. He is now in jail,” Lesufi stated.

Also, Lesufi’s comments referred to the murder of businessman Andrew Lambrianos, who was shot and killed in December 2023. The 43-year-old tax consultancy owner was ambushed by gunmen while pulling out of his driveway on Coleraine Drive. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk confirmed that a 42-year-old Argentinian national was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday morning. Police intercepted him moments before he was due to board a flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Van Wyk stated that investigators believe the suspect was the “mastermind” behind the assassination.

Crackdown on crime kingpins represents a significant step in the Gauteng government’s efforts to restore safety and security. With continued cooperation between law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and the private sector, authorities hope to dismantle organised crime networks and significantly reduce violent crime in the province.
