By midday on Christmas Day, 231 babies were born in hospitals across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, marking a festive day filled with joy and celebration.
Gauteng Welcomes 184 Babies
Gauteng hospitals delivered 184 newborns — 105 boys and 79 girls. Tembisa Hospital recorded the highest number of deliveries, with 16 babies born. Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko congratulated the new parents during visits to public health facilities.
Nkomo-Ralehoko, joined by Deputy Home Affairs Minister Njabulo Nzuza and Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, celebrated with mothers at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital. They presented gifts to the new mothers and emphasised the importance of immunisation.

“Congratulations to all the families. We encourage parents to ensure their babies are immunised on specified dates to protect them against diseases such as polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis, measles, and meningitis.
“Immunisation is free at all public clinics and community healthcare centres in the province,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
Nzuza highlighted the significance of immediate birth registration. “The entry into the national population register is through birth registration. Without it, children cannot fully access services. To make this process easier, we’ve established home affairs offices within health facilities,” he said.

Zandile Mqumba, 38, was among the mothers at Tembisa Hospital. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 12:12 am, the first child delivered at the hospital on Christmas Day. She expressed gratitude for the gifts and appreciated the on-site birth registration, which allowed her child to receive a birth certificate immediately.
The day also saw the official reopening of Tembisa Hospital’s renovated 60-bed female medical ward. The upgrades include additional oxygen and suction points, improved ventilation, and a nurse call system.
KwaZulu-Natal Celebrates 47 Christmas Babies
KwaZulu-Natal welcomed 47 babies by midday — 21 boys and 26 girls. Premier Thami Ntuli and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi visited Victoria Mxenge Hospital in Durban to celebrate with the new parents.
Simelane-Mngadi noted that three 15-year-old girls were among the mothers of Christmas babies. She extended her congratulations and urged all parents to prioritise their children’s health and well-being.
This Christmas, the miracle of new life brought joy to many families, as hospitals across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal worked tirelessly to ensure safe deliveries and provide essential services to both mothers and their newborns.
