Over 20 Dead In Deadly Taxi Crashes As SANTACO Issues Urgent Safety Plea

More than 20 people have died in a devastating series of taxi crashes across South Africa this week, sparking renewed calls for road safety and accountability within the transport sector.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) said the alarming number of deaths highlights the urgent need for everyone in the industry to prioritise passenger safety.

On Thursday, eight people were killed and several others injured following a collision on the N3 between Van Reenen’s Pass and Montrose.

Earlier in the week, three separate taxi crashes claimed 14 more lives, pushing the death toll to over 20.

SANTACO Calls for Collective Action on Road Safety

SANTACO spokesperson Mmatshikidi Phala said the organisation’s leadership was deeply troubled by the surge in fatalities.

“SANTACO President Mr Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe, together with the entire national leadership, have expressed deep concern and heartbreak over the rising number of fatalities and the devastating impact on families and communities,” Phala stated.

SANTACO reiterated its commitment to improving safety standards within the industry, urging operators, drivers, and passengers alike to play their part in preventing further loss of life.
