Over 2 000 Sexual Offenders Nabbed In One Month, 46 Jailed For Life

At least 2 320 sexual offenders were arrested across the country during September, with 46 receiving life sentences, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed in a statement on Saturday, 18 October 2025.
Police spokesperson Amanda Van Wyk praised the dedication of officers working to curb gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

“The highest number of arrests were recorded in the Western Cape (536), followed by Gauteng (459) and KwaZulu-Natal (360). In the same period, 46 sexual offenders were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 35 others received sentences of 20 years or more for various sexual offences,” said Van Wyk.
The latest statistics represent a significant breakthrough in the ongoing national effort to combat sexual crimes.
High-Profile Cases Lead to Heavy Sentences
In one major case, KwaZulu-Natal police arrested a 36-year-old man in KwaDukuza earlier this month. The suspect is allegedly linked to a series of rape and robbery incidents reported between 2013 and 2016 in KwaDukuza, Mandeni, and Tongaat.

Meanwhile, in Gauteng, a 34-year-old man received three life terms for multiple charges of rape, sexual assault, and exposing minors to pornographic material. The Pretoria North Magistrates Court also found him guilty of repeatedly sexually abusing his niece and nephew.

In another case in the Northern Cape, 43-year-old Johannes Mouton was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend, 38-year-old Sanna Basson, following a domestic violence incident in November 2024.
Van Wyk highlighted that these arrests and convictions mark tangible progress in the country’s war against sexual violence.
“Each arrest and each conviction marks a step closer to a safer South Africa for all,” she said.
