Over 1,000 Homes Destroyed By Relentless Flooding Across Mpumalanga Districts

More than 1,000 homes have been reduced to rubble as relentless rainfall continues to batter parts of Mpumalanga, leaving families displaced and communities reeling.

The destruction follows an Alert Level 10 warning issued by the South African Weather Service amid ongoing inclement weather.

Since late last year, the province has endured sustained heavy downpours, triggering widespread localised flooding.

The impact has been severe, with at least 19 people losing their lives in weather-related incidents across Mpumalanga. Emergency responders and disaster management teams remain active on the ground, working to determine the full scale of the damage.

Although the first signs of devastation emerged toward the end of 2025, the rainfall has shown no signs of easing in early 2026, compounding losses for already vulnerable communities and stretching response efforts.

Mpumalanga Flooding Hits Nkangala, Gert Sibande and Ehlanzeni Hardest

The worst-affected regions span three key districts: Nkangala, Gert Sibande and Ehlanzeni. In these areas, floodwaters have swept through residential zones, destroying houses and leaving thousands without shelter, food or basic services.

Many residents have been forced to seek temporary accommodation as assessments continue, with officials warning that further rainfall could worsen conditions in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Government Issues Safety Warning as Rains Continue

Cooperative Governance spokesperson Fredy Ngobe has urged communities to take weather warnings seriously and place safety first while hazardous conditions persist.

“What we are appealing to the communities is that they should ensure they adhere to our weather safety tips, alerts and our awareness campaigns, which we carry throughout, because most importantly, we want to save lives.”

National Government Plans Oversight Visits to Affected Areas

In response to the growing crisis, national government representatives are expected to visit the affected districts tomorrow.

The oversight visits aim to assess the damage firsthand, strengthen coordination with local authorities and accelerate relief and recovery interventions for displaced residents.

As Mpumalanga braces for further rainfall, authorities continue to stress vigilance and cooperation to prevent additional loss of life.
