Outrage Over Viral Video Of Patient Dragged By Security Guards At Cape Town Hospital

A shocking video has gone viral, showing a young patient being dragged across the floor by security guards at Karl Bremer Hospital in Cape Town. The footage, originally posted on TikTok by Angelo Santamaria, has sparked widespread outrage, with social media users condemning the incident as inhumane.

Details of the Incident

The 26-second video shows a boy in a hospital robe lying on the floor, clutching two packets of medication. A female Phangela Security guard is seen tapping the boy on the shoulder, urging him to “get up” in isiXhosa.

When he remains on the floor, crying, the guard grabs his left arm and drags him across the floor. Shortly afterward, another guard joins in, and together they drag the boy further.

The video’s caption reads: “No man Karl Bremer Hospital. You bring your child in for a head injury, then this is happening in front of you. Seriously.”

Hospital and Security Firm Respond

Megan Davids, Communications Officer for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, expressed regret over the incident and confirmed an investigation is underway.

“Karl Bremer Hospital deeply regrets the incident. We are committed to upholding the dignity and respect of all our patients. The matter has been raised with the contracted security service provider, which has initiated its internal processes,” said Davids.

Phangela Security Group confirmed the suspension of the guards involved, pending disciplinary action. “We are taking the matter seriously and conducting a full investigation,” said the company’s legal counsel, Anthea Jansen van Vuuren.

Public Outcry

The video, shared widely across TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp, has drawn strong reactions. Facebook user Beryl Sonia Jacobs commented, “This is seriously inhumane, where are the nurses? You can see he can’t help himself. This is a person, not a dog.”
