Orlando Pirates Coach Explains Surprise Substitution Of Patrick Maswanganyi Against Sundowns

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained his bold call to substitute Patrick Maswanganyi just 38 minutes into the MTN8 semifinal clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The move shocked many supporters, as Maswanganyi is usually one of the Buccaneers’ most reliable attacking players.

Speaking to SuperSport TV after the game, Ouaddou stressed that the decision was not a reflection of the player’s quality.

“You know, I have been a player for 17 years at the high level,” said the coach. “This can happen sometimes that we are not in the game. It doesn’t mean that you are a bad player, I believe in him.”

Tactical Shuffle Behind the Substitution

Maswanganyi’s early exit saw right-back Bandile Shandu introduced, prompting a reshuffle in Pirates’ setup. Kamogelo Sebelebele shifted back to his natural wing position, while Relebohile Mofokeng moved into the central number 10 role previously occupied by Maswanganyi.

Ouaddou reiterated that his decision was purely tactical, not disciplinary or injury-related. “He is a fantastic player; he’s been very important for the club for many years. So, today was maybe not his time. I’m sure he will help us in the future,” he explained.

Orlando Pirates Advance to MTN8 Final Against Stellenbosch

Despite the surprise substitution, the Buccaneers held their nerve and secured victory over Sundowns in a penalty shootout. The result booked their place in the MTN8 final, where they will face Stellenbosch FC on 13 September.

The Buccaneers now shift their focus to preparing for the showdown, as they aim to defend their MTN8 crown and add more silverware to the cabinet.
