OR Tambo Travel Chaos: ATNS Staff Shortage Triggers Widespread Flight Delays

The Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS) has moved to address widespread flight delays at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg as travellers make their way home following the festive season break.
Frustrated passengers took to social media on Sunday, complaining about long delays and a lack of communication. Some travellers said they were left in the dark, with no updates displayed on the airport’s arrival and departure information systems.
ATNS Blames Temporary Staffing Constraints In OR Tambo
ATNS Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications Mphilo Dlamini said the disruptions were mainly caused by temporary human resource constraints at the air traffic control station.
“ATNS wishes to assure travellers, airlines, and all stakeholders that contingency measures have been implemented and additional resources are being deployed to stabilise operations. These interventions are expected to resolve the situation today and progressively restore normal service levels,” Dlamini said.

She stressed that safety remains a top priority, adding that ATNS is working closely with airlines and airport partners to reduce delays and restore smooth operations.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank travellers and operators for their patience and cooperation.”
Airlink Cites Ripple Effect Across Flight Network
Regional airline Airlink also expressed regret over the delays, saying it is working to recover its schedule and get passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.
“The delays stem from the Air Traffic Navigation Service’s (ATNS) failure to ensure it has sufficient staff to accommodate and manage the normal scheduled traffic to and from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport today,” the airline said.
Airlink said the disruption had a knock-on effect across its entire network.
“Today’s schedule disruptions have had a ripple effect on all of our flights. In addition to departure delays from O.R. Tambo International, the shortage of air traffic controllers prompted a restriction on the number of flights permitted to be in Johannesburg’s airspace at any given time,” the airline said.
The airline added that some flights were diverted to alternative airports, including Gaborone and Durban, leaving aircraft and crews out of position.
“Rest assured, we are working to resolve all of the delays as quickly as ATNS can accommodate us.”
Airlink said passengers should monitor updates on its app and social media platforms and continue checking airport departure and arrival screens.
