PICS| OR Tambo Police Intercept Another Brazilian Drug Trafficker

Police at OR Tambo International Airport made two significant arrests this week, detaining Brazilian nationals accused of drug trafficking. Both suspects were apprehended with cocaine worth millions of rands wrapped around their torsos.

The first arrest occurred on Thursday, when a 44-year-old Brazilian woman landed at the airport from São Paulo, Brazil. Acting on intelligence, the South African Police Service (SAPS) discovered cocaine concealed around her upper body.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the suspect faces a drug trafficking charge and will soon appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

In a related case on Sunday, authorities arrested a 25-year-old Brazilian man shortly after his arrival from São Paulo. Police seized over 3 kilograms of cocaine, valued at R1.8 million, also hidden around his torso.

Mathe stated, “This is the second drug trafficker to be arrested with cocaine wrapped around their upper torso this week.”

OR Tambo Heightens Drug Trafficking Surveillance

Mathe commended the ongoing efforts of the OR Tambo International Airport police in cracking down on drug trafficking operations. “South Africa is not a playground for drug peddlers,” she said.

In a broader context, SAPS has intensified operations to deter drug trafficking across the country. During a three-month period, law enforcement intercepted 14 drug traffickers at OR Tambo International Airport alone.

Collaborative efforts between SAPS and international law enforcement agencies have played a key role in intercepting traffickers and massive drug consignments.

International Cooperation Yields Results

Last month, SAPS revealed its success in foiling several trafficking attempts, including the arrest of four South Africans returning from Brazil.

A notable case involved a 25-year-old South African woman detained in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after a covert intelligence team from SAPS Gauteng flagged her for suspicious travel patterns.

The SAPS has reiterated its commitment to combating the illicit drug trade, emphasising the importance of global partnerships in dismantling trafficking networks.
