Opposition Leaders Criticise President Ramaphosa’s Parliamentary Address “Sophisticated Liar”

In a parliamentary address on Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa outlined his government’s achievements and future plans.

However, the response from the opposition has been overwhelmingly critical. Dr. John Hlophe of the MK Party, Vuyo Zungula of ATM, Herman Mashaba of ActionSA, and Mmusi Maimane of Build One SA each had scathing remarks about the president’s speech.

Dr John Hlophe was particularly harsh, labelling President Ramaphosa as a “sophisticated liar” who can lie with a straight face. He accused the president of making false claims, particularly about job creation and the GNU (Government of National Unity).

Hlophe argued that the president’s promises are unreliable given his track record over the past five years. He further suggested that the speech was prepared by the DA, which he claims explains the applause from white South Africans.

ATM leader Vuyo Zungula echoed Hlophe’s sentiments, describing Ramaphosa’s address as repetitive and lacking in substance. Zungula criticised the president for failing to implement policies that would improve the quality of life for all citizens.

He emphasised the role of the “progressive caucus” in holding the government accountable and introducing practical solutions like insourcing workers.

Herman Mashaba of ActionSA expressed his disappointment, stating that even people in villages and informal settlements do not trust Ramaphosa.

He highlighted the ANC’s history of corruption and incompetence, as well as the DA’s reluctance to address inequality. Mashaba characterized the GNU as a grand coalition incapable of fostering economic growth.

Mmusi Maimane of Build One SA acknowledged the priorities outlined by the president but criticized the government’s failure in implementation and accountability.

He pointed out specific policy contestations within the GNU, such as the National Health Insurance (NHI) and the BELA Bill. Maimane stressed the need for genuine efforts to combat corruption, beyond mere lip service.
