Cross-Border Operation Leads To Major Drug Lab Discovery, Arrests 46 Year Old Suspect

A joint operation between the Western Cape Organised Crime Investigations (OCI), and the Head Office Narcotics Unit led to the discovery of a fully operational drug laboratory in Vanderbijlpark on Friday.

The discovery, led to the arrest of a 46-year-old suspect.

The operation, which spanned across provinces, was part of a larger initiative targeting drug syndicates in South Africa.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk confirmed that the investigation followed a tip-off about a suspected drug dealer linked to a larger network operating across the country.

The suspect had been under surveillance for drug dealings in De Rust, Western Cape, before the authorities traced him to Vanderbijlpark, where they uncovered the sophisticated lab.

R1.5 Million Worth Of Drugs And Manufacturing Equipment Seized

The successful raid resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of drugs and manufacturing equipment worth an estimated R1.5 million.

Items recovered included over 7,000 Mandrax tablets, an unlicensed firearm, a tablet press, various chemicals, and additional production tools.

Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk stated that the police seized a large stockpile of Mandrax tablets, worth more than R560,000, during a search of the suspect’s vehicle and premises in Alberton, South Crest.

This initial raid led to further discoveries at the Vanderbijlpark property, where law enforcement uncovered a fully operational lab capable of mass production of Mandrax tablets.

Speaking on the discovery Wyk said, “The team’s hard work, led by skilled investigators, resulted in dismantling a significant drug manufacturing operation.

“The suspect is expected to face serious charges of possession, dealing, and manufacturing drugs.”

Ongoing Investigations Into Broader Syndicate

The arrest of the 46-year-old suspect is part of an ongoing investigation into a widespread syndicate operating in Gauteng.

This is the latest success in a series of recent major drug busts targeted at illicit manufacturers and their distribution networks in South Africa.

Earlier this month, Gauteng police uncovered a substantial drug stash at a self-storage facility in Derdepoort, Pretoria, with a street value estimated at R15 million.

The confiscated substances included scheduled medicines, steroids, and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), suggesting the syndicate’s involvement in the illegal trade of controlled substances across various sectors.

In addition, a breakthrough in February led to the arrest of six individuals linked to a major operation, which had been operating an online platform to distribute.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the syndicate was distributing a range of illicit substances, including stimulants, steroids, and other dangerous drugs.

Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk emphasized that while some charges against two suspects were withdrawn, the investigations into the syndicate’s major operations are ongoing.
