OpenAI Is Introducing Ads In ChatGPT As Company Expands Subscription Options In The US

OpenAI is preparing to introduce advertising into ChatGPT, marking a significant shift in how the popular chatbot will be monetised. The company says it will begin testing ads with users in the United States “in the coming weeks”.

According to a blog post published on Friday, sponsored products and services will appear below conversations for adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers. OpenAI stressed that advertising will not interfere with responses generated by the chatbot.

“Ads will be clearly labeled and separated from the organic answer,” the company said, adding that sponsored placements would not influence ChatGPT’s replies. “Answers are optimized based on what’s most helpful to you.”

How Ads Will Appear in ChatGPT Conversations

OpenAI said adverts will not be shown when users are discussing sensitive topics, including health, mental wellbeing or current political issues. The company also confirmed that users under the age of 18 will not see ads on the platform.

On the issue of privacy, OpenAI said it will not sell or share user data with advertisers. Users will be able to turn off ad personalisation and clear the information used to generate sponsored content.

“We’ll always offer a way to not see ads in ChatGPT, including a paid tier that’s ad-free,” OpenAI said. Users will also be able to dismiss ads, after which they may be asked to explain why they chose not to engage.

“Given what AI can do, we’re excited to develop new experiences over time that people find more helpful and relevant than any other ads. Conversational interfaces create possibilities for people to go beyond static messages and links,” the company added.

ChatGPT Go Launches in the US With Ads Included

Alongside the advertising rollout, OpenAI announced that its ChatGPT Go subscription will become available in the US. The tier was first launched in India last August as a cheaper alternative to the Plus and Pro plans.

In the US, ChatGPT Go will cost $8 per month, which is $12 less than the Plus subscription. The plan offers message, file upload and image generation limits that are 10 times higher than the free tier, as well as expanded memory and a larger context window to help ChatGPT remember details from previous conversations.

However, OpenAI confirmed that ads will still appear on the Go plan. Users who want an ad-free experience will need to subscribe to the more expensive Plus or Pro tiers.

The company noted that its “long-term focus remains on building products that millions of people and businesses find valuable enough to pay for”.

Ads Signal a Broader Shift Across AI Platforms

Reports suggest OpenAI has been testing advertising within ChatGPT since at least late last year. With the rising costs of training and running large AI models, industry observers expect advertising to become more common across chatbot platforms.

As competition intensifies and operating costs remain high, ads are increasingly seen as a way for AI companies to balance free access with long-term sustainability.
