One Robber Killed, Three Injured In Shootout With Police

On Monday, August 1, early in the morning, a fierce gunfight broke out between the police and a group of armed robbers in the Eastern Cape’s small town of Komga.

Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, a spokesman for the South African Police Service (SAPS), said the armed suspects were “left disappointed and embarrassed when their plan was disrupted” by individuals who faced deadly gunfire.

Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe, the provincial MEC for Transport, commended the police for acting quickly to arrest the five suspects who were allegedly carrying rifles and pistols. “A backup from the beret-wearing [Tactical Response Team] Unit (Amaberete) and the NIU provided back up as the police went in,” said the MEC.

The robbers allegedly struck while the managers and employees of a business were beginning their workday. “It is alleged that about five (5) armed suspects aged between 30 and 40 forcefully entered the business and began to demand safe keys from the manager, whilst others were locking and ordering the staff into steel cabinets,” said the police spokesperson.

One suspect was fatally wounded in the shootout and three more were injured and rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The fifth and final suspect was arrested on the spot and is in custody.

Two rifles, a pistol, a grinder, and a vehicle – believed to have been stolen – were confiscated. The Provincial Organised Crime Unit is investigating cases of Business Robbery, Attempted Murder, and Possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

“Those suspects must face the full might of the law. Had our police officers not displayed courage and sacrifice in a volatile situation such as that, many lives would have been lost in that small town including our police officers,” said the Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomethetheleli Mene.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Komga Magistrate’s Court once charged.
