One Robber Killed, Another Injured In Foiled Mpumalanga Cash-In-Transit Heist

Police in Mpumalanga are investigating a failed cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that ended in a deadly shootout between suspected robbers and security guards on Thursday. The attempted robbery took place near White River, where security personnel shot two alleged attackers.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the incident, saying:
“During the incident, two alleged suspects were reportedly shot by security guards while attempting to carry out their mission.

“Preliminary reports indicate that an unidentified number of suspects were involved in the armed group that attacked a cash van, in an apparent attempt to rob the guards, but fled the scene during a shootout with the security personnel.”

One suspect died at the scene, while the other sustained injuries and is currently hospitalised under police guard.

Weapons Recovered, Robber Under Guard in Hospital

Following the foiled robbery, police recovered two rifles from the scene and later found a Ford Ranger bakkie — allegedly used by the attackers — abandoned in Swalala, near Masoyi.

Mdhluli stated that no money was stolen during the attempted robbery: “It is important to note that, according to our initial investigations, no money was stolen during this attempted robbery.”

The surviving suspect is expected to appear in court once he is medically fit. Police continue their search for the remaining suspects, appealing to the public for assistance.

“We urge anyone with further information regarding the whereabouts of the outstanding suspects or any information relating to this incident to contact the SAPS, report anonymously through Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or send information via My SAPS App,” Mdhluli said.

He assured that all information would be treated confidentially and that callers may remain anonymous.

Police Praise Swift Security Response Amid Broader Crackdown

Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the quick and professional response of the private security team involved.

“The swift response and professionalism demonstrated by our security partners during this incident are commendable. Our commitment to ensuring the safety of the community remains unwavering, and we will continue to work tirelessly to bring criminals to justice,” said Mkhwanazi.

He noted that law enforcement agencies across Mpumalanga are working closely with private partners and that current crime-fighting strategies are showing positive results.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident a CIT robbery suspect in Thokoza, Gauteng, lost his leg after an explosive he was attempting to detonate went off.

Police said a group of around 10 armed suspects tried to bomb a cash van in Phola Park Extension 5. The vehicle was rammed by a silver BMW before one suspect attempted to place explosives near the van, only to be severely injured in the blast.
