One Of Limpopo’s Separated Conjoined Twins Dies Weeks After Surgery

One of the twin boys who underwent a rare separation procedure at Mankweng Hospital earlier this year has sadly passed away.

The surgery, performed in January, had initially offered hope after the twins — who were joined at the abdomen — were successfully separated by a team of specialists in Polokwane.

Premier Confirms Cause of Death Following Sudden Decline

Phophi Ramathuba confirmed the tragic development, revealing that the infant died due to multiple organ failure.

She explained that the baby had shown signs of recovery in the weeks following the operation, raising hopes among the medical team.

“The baby tried to recover, we thought we were out of danger, because after two and a half weeks, we thought we were out of danger, and we were confident. Unfortunately, the past two days, the condition just changed, last night the condition changed to the worst,” said Ramathuba.

Doctors Fought to Save the Separated Conjoined Twin After High-Risk Procedure

The twins’ condition had been extremely delicate from birth, as they shared vital organs — making the surgery both complicated and high-risk.

Despite the best efforts of doctors and specialists, Ramathuba said every possible measure was taken to save the child.

The passing marks a devastating setback following what had initially been seen as a medical breakthrough in the province.
