One Dead, 20 Homes Destroyed As Blaze Tears Through Masiphumelele Informal Settlement

One person has died following a devastating fire that ripped through the Masiphumelele informal settlement in Cape Town early on Monday morning.
According to the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, emergency crews were alerted to the blaze in Masemola Street at around 6AM. Several firefighting teams were immediately dispatched to contain the fast-spreading flames.
Masiphumelele Fire Destroys Homes and Displaces Families
City Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed the tragic loss of life and extensive property damage.
“One person died in a fire in Masemola Street. Our initial estimate is that one formal and around 20 informal structures were destroyed,” said Carelse.
He added that firefighting crews remained on site to ensure all hotspots were extinguished and to prevent the blaze from reigniting.

By mid-morning, the fire had been fully contained, but the aftermath left several families without homes and belongings. City authorities are expected to assess the damage and assist displaced residents through emergency relief efforts.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
