Seven Officials Dismissed Over AngloGold Ashanti Hospital Refurbishment Scandal

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi dismisses seven officials who are implicated in the controversial AngloGold Ashanti Hospital refurbishment project. The revelation came during his 2025 State of the Province Address (SOPA) in Tshwane on Monday night.

Lesufi faced mounting pressure from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng, which demanded clarity on the scandal-ridden project. Responding to their concerns, he confirmed that nine officials from the Gauteng Department of Health and Infrastructure Development had been suspended for irregularities in awarding contracts for the hospital’s refurbishment in 2022. Following a disciplinary process, seven of them have now been dismissed.

“We are determined to enhance our prevention, detection, investigation, and resolution procedures, emphasising the institutionalisation of clean governance. To this end, we welcome the findings of the disciplinary process,” said Lesufi.

Lesufi further stated that, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been tasked with recovering funds misused by those involved in the project.

Earlier this month, the SIU confirmed that health and infrastructure contracts awarded for the refurbishment were unlawful, unconstitutional, and invalid. The project, initially budgeted at R50 million, escalated to an astonishing R500 million, yet the hospital remains abandoned and stripped of resources.

In a broader crackdown on corruption, Lesufi disclosed that lifestyle audits were conducted last year on senior officials, including Heads of Department (HODs) in Gauteng and CEOs of provincial entities. The audits revealed that three HODs failed to declare their financial interests properly.

Moreso, the provincial government has since instructed the SIU to extend these audits to close relatives and associates of the implicated officials. Lesufi also confirmed that all Members of the Executive Council (MECs) had undergone lifestyle audits.

“We are now taking lifestyle audits to the next level. All officials handling tenders and contracts will be subjected to these audits. Already, 2,184 of them have submitted the required documents, and we are awaiting the results,” he stated.

Lesufi revealed that the Gauteng Provincial Government currently has 2,184 Supply Chain Management posts filled, with 279 officials already security vetted. The remaining 1,905 applicants are awaiting feedback.

This decisive action underscores the province’s commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring accountability within government departments.
