Former Kouga Municipality Official Convicted Of R48,400 Bribe

Thursheus Edin Fabian Snyders, has been convicted of corruption and accepting bribes in a case that dates back over a decade.

The former senior official at the Kouga Local Municipality (KLM), who was convicted was found guilty by the Gqeberha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for unlawfully accepting R48,400 in bribes from WOOA Telecomms CC between 2012 and 2014.

Reasons For Conviction

During the convict’s tenure as a Senior Administrative Officer for Auxiliary Services at KLM, Snyders manipulated the municipality’s procurement procedures to benefit WOOA Telecomms.

In return for the bribes, he secured preferential treatment for the company in municipal tender processes and ensured early payments of invoices for contracts related to telecommunication services.

Convict And His Accomplice

Snyders’ actions were carried out in collusion with Derval Coral Rust and Werner Rust, representatives from WOOA Telecomms.

The three worked together to influence the awarding of municipal tenders, some of which were ultimately cancelled due to fraudulent activities.

Snyder who was convicted will be remanded for sentencing on April 14, 2025, with reports from probation officers and correctional services to be prepared in the interim.

Commitment to Prosecute Corruption

The National Prosecuting Authority,NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali emphasized the organization’s commitment to prosecuting individuals who abuse positions of trust for personal gain. “This conviction sends a clear message that those who exploit their office for corrupt purposes will be held accountable,” Tyali said.

Snyders’ co-accused, Derval Coral Rust and Werner Rust, will face trial on April 7, 2025, for their involvement in the fraudulent scheme.
