Police Officers Accused Of Stealing R18 300 From Somalian Shop Granted Bail

Four police officers accused of stealing R18 300 from a Somalian-owned shop in Delft have been released on R2 000 bail each after appearing in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The officers — Warrant Officer Elroy Daniels (53), Sergeant Simphiwe Ntsali (45), Constable Avlon de Bruyn (32), and Constable Thando Monono (36) — are all attached to the Bellville Rapid Railway Unit. They face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Officers Accused of Delft Robbery

The four were arrested on 2 November 2025 for allegedly stealing the cash during a search at a tuck shop in Delft on 2 October 2025. The shop reportedly kept R65 000 in its storeroom for cigarette supplier payments — with R18 300 later discovered missing.

According to court testimony, the officers claimed they had received intelligence about illegal firearms and drugs being stored at the premises in Heinkel Crescent, The Hague, and were granted permission by the shopkeeper, identified as Hassan, to search the property.

They maintained that nothing was taken, recording the search in their pocketbooks and obtaining Hassan’s signature to confirm this.

However, Constable Duister from the Provincial Detective Anti-Corruption Unit told the court that the members had no authority to operate in Delft that day, as they were assigned to work in the Wellington–Wolseley corridor. Cellphone records and vehicle tracking data allegedly placed them at the Delft location during the incident.

Bail Conditions and Next Court Date

The court noted that no witnesses directly saw the officers taking the money, and that the accusation was based on assumption, according to the defence.

The officers were granted bail on condition that they do not enter Delft and have no contact with State witnesses, directly or indirectly.

The case has been postponed to 21 January 2026 for further investigation.
